Smallmatek is pleased to announce that Inês Borges successfully defended her PhD thesis on 17 June 2026, entitled "Towards a Circular Phosphorus Economy: Capture and Recovery using Layered Double Hydroxides". Her thesis was developed within the EngIQ Industrial PhD Programme in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering. Over the past four years, the research was conducted at Smallmatek, contributing to the development of innovative approaches for phosphorus capture and recovery using Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs).
The work supports the transition towards a circular phosphorus economy by advancing sustainable technologies for the recovery and reuse of this critical resource. The EngIQ PhD Programme promotes close collaboration between academia and industry, providing a framework for research that is strongly oriented towards industrial innovation. This project exemplifies how academic research and industrial expertise can be combined to address real-world challenges and accelerate the development of sustainable technological solutions.
